Carole Lieberman, M.D., M.P.H.

Ever since Carole Lieberman, M.D., M.P.H. decided to become a psychiatrist, it was with the intention of helping the general public - not only people she would treat in her office. It is why she obtained her education and training at preeminent institutions: NYU/Bellevue Psychiatric Institute (where she was Chief Resident), and the Hampstead Clinic in London with Anna Freud. It is also why she did research in “How to Use the Media for Public Health Education” for which she was awarded a Fellowship from NIMH while earning her Master’s Degree in Public Health at UCLA. In addition, she works as a Forensic Psychiatrist and Expert Witness in high-profile civil and criminal trials, helping people get justice. (www.expertwitnessforensicpsychiatrist.com).

From the time Dr. Lieberman was a little girl, pledging allegiance to the flag, singing patriotic songs in her New York City classrooms, and serving as a flag bearer at her Girl Scout troop events, patriotism has stirred her heart. So, it is no wonder that she has been devoting her life to helping America - with her work as America’s Psychiatrist and, since 9/11, as The Terrorist Therapist® (www.terroristtherapist.com). Indeed, it is a natural progression that, upon seeing America become increasingly agitated and out of touch with reality, such that some have developed Trump Derangement Syndrome, Dr. Lieberman would try to solve this problem that endangers our country’s mental health.

Here are just a few highlights of her career that will clarify this progression and the motive for her current efforts to get TDS accepted into the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Dr. Lieberman has done several media campaigns to help Americans with their mental and physical health. For example, she did one on the “7 Warning Signs of Mental Illness,” to encourage people to recognize they have a problem, so they can get diagnosed and treated earlier, before mental illness takes a toll on their life. She also did a campaign throughout the Covid19 pandemic, called “HEAL MYSELF” - where each letter of the acronym represents a healthy habit to practice each day – to increase immunity and protect oneself.

Dr. Lieberman has also long campaigned against gratuitous violence in the media, including while serving as the Chair of the National Coalition on TV Violence. She has testified before Congress on several occasions explaining the impact of media violence on our psyche and providing written plans for legislation to help curb it. In addition, after campaigning for months, she succeeded in stopping the ’Schwarzenegger Rocket’, a NASA rocket that was to have an ad for Schwarzenegger’s movie, “Last Action Hero” on the outside. She was not only concerned about promoting its violent content, but also appalled at America sending messages of violence into space.

Since 9/11, Dr. Lieberman has devoted herself to serving as The Terrorist Therapist®, helping people keep calm and carry on, and build resilience for the imminent terror attacks to come. She’s helped people nationwide, in the UK, Paris, Belgium and is currently volunteering to heal Israelis. Dr. Lieberman has written 2 books on terrorism: Coping with Terrorism: Dreams Interrupted, published in London for the one- year anniversary of their 9/11, which was 7/7 2005. Her latest book, the 5x award-winner, Lions and Tigers and Terrorists, Oh My! How to Protect Your Child in a Time of Terror, is the first book about terrorism for children (and the parents and teachers who love them). Dr. Lieberman hosts a podcast called "The Terrorist Therapist® Show,” does speaking and media engagements about terrorism, and has created music videos for the anniversaries of 9/11 and Oct. 7 that are played on mobile billboards traveling around NYC, Washington, DC and L.A. (These videos can be seen at www.terroristtherapist.com.)

Dr. Lieberman has also written award-winning/bestselling books on relationships, helping men and women find love instead of heartbreak, with Bad Boys: Why We Love Them, How to Live with Them and When to Leave Them, and Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets. Dr. Lieberman is a 3x Emmy-honored media psychiatrist - having appeared on everything from Oprah to FOX News, Newsmax, CNN, The Today Show, Good Morning America, ABC, CBS, NBC, Court TV and countless others, providing comfort and advice for years. She also hosts a podcast called “Dr. Carole’s Couch” on Voice America.

Today, Trump Derangement Syndrome presents as an equally serious challenge to the mental health of our country as many of these other challenges Dr. Lieberman has undertaken. So, now you can understand how it is a natural progression for her to want to help those suffering from TDS, and those they negatively affect, by getting the disorder recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). This book, published periodically by the American Psychiatric Association, is used by mental health professionals to serve as a common language, and used by insurance companies to decide how much treatment they will provide for each patient. Therefore, if Trump Derangement Syndrome were to be included, mental health clinicians would recognize it more easily and people who are afflicted by TDS would be able to have their treatment covered (at least in part). This would go a long way towards saving individuals, families, institutions and America, as a whole.

TDS is the biggest threat to mental health today, but Dr. Lieberman has long been concerned about the failures of America’s mental health system – from psychiatrists making people worse by becoming pill pushers instead of also providing psychotherapy, to the need to bring back hospitals for the chronically mentally ill instead of pretending not to notice them on the streets and in the jails. She has plans to fix the system overall  and Make Mental Health Great Again.
